Taylor Swift on Kanye West's Outburst: 'Ouch'
By Dave ItzkoffUpdated | 1:58 p.m. In an interview Tuesday on the ABC daytime talk show "The View," the country singer Taylor Swift said that she had not yet heard directly from the rapper Kanye West after he interrupted her acceptance speech Sunday at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Though Mr. West has apologized publicly to Ms. Swift for saying on Sunday that her award for best female video should have been given to Beyoncé, Ms. Swift said that Mr. West has "not personally reached out," but that she would accept his phone call or e-mail message "If he wanted to say hi." The Associated Press reported that Mr. West called Ms. Swift to apologize to her when "The View" concluded its broadcast.
Surrounded by panelists that included the guest co-host and reality star Kate Gosselin, Ms. Swift described her thought process on Sunday night as Mr. West made his surprise appearance. She said her thoughts went from "Don't trip and fall" to "Oh, Kanye West is here" to "Cool haircut. What are you doing there? And then ouch. And then, I guess I'm not going to get to thank the fans."
Regarding Mr. West's outburst, Ms. Swift said, "I'm not going to say I wasn't rattled by it," but she said she "had to get myself back to the place where I could perform" for a live music segment that immediately followed her acceptance speech.
Ms. Swift said she drew strength from the support of performers backstage at the VMAs and from encouraging messages she read on Twitter and elsewhere online. "I just never imagined there were that many people out there looking out for me," she said.
Before moving on to other topics, the "View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg said, "Hopefully, if Kanye is watching, he'll know what to do."
